Folk music has always had a special place in Canadian culture, from the ballads of Gordon Lightfoot to the sing-along anthems of Stompin’ Tom Connors. These days, the genre of folk music has evolved to include a diverse blend of styles and sounds. “Folk” no longer just means a lone balladeer with an acoustic guitar; it can include elements of rock, jazz, country and anything you can imagine.
This diversity will be on display at the Canmore Folk Music Festival, taking place Aug. 3-5 in Centennial Park. Some of Canada’s top folk acts will take perform in a beautiful outdoor setting. Fans will come together to celebrate the spirit of folk and the enduring spirit of a town that’s working hard to overcome the challenges presented by recent floods. The event will feature concerts, workshops, and activities for kids in a family-friendly, alcohol-free park. The festival will also host evening concerts at the “Festival Pub” in Canmore’s Union Hall.
The 2013 festival lineup includes Canadian folk-rockers Spirit of the West and Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo, along with indie up-and-comers Great Lake Swimmers, blues sensation Matt Andersen and a total of 14 other performers.
