Showcasing more than 2500 athletes ages 11 to 17, the Alberta Winter Games is one of the most exciting sporting events happening in the province this winter. With 19 different sports, everything from gymnastics to figure skating, the event serves as an opportunity for young athletes to get vital experience competing on a provincial level and to take early steps in their dreams of achieving Olympic gold.

This year marks the 20th Alberta Winter Games, which began in 1979, and has happened every 2 years since. It takes place from February 6th to 9th, 2014 at a number of different venues around the Canmore-Banff area.

More than just a showcase of amazing young athletes, the games will offer visitors an excellent opportunity to experience the rich arts and culture of the region, which will be on vibrant display at a number of cultural events happening concurrently with the sporting events.

The Alberta Winter Games are a huge boon to the local economies in Canmore and Banff. More than 10,000 visitors are expected to attend the games and $2.5 million is estimated to be generated for events before during and after the games. It’s an economic benefit that owes its success to the efforts of over 2500 volunteers who work to organize the events.

The AWG also has commitment to waste reduction and sustainable operations. They are calling the 2014 AWG first truly “green” games. 80% of the waste generated during the games will be recycled rather than ending up in a landfill.

A weekend pass to the AWG is just $20, available online and offers access to all of the sporting events. A family weekend pass is also available for $75, good for a family of 5.
