Five Animals To Look Out For In Kananaskis Country

More and more people will be connecting with nature around Canmore in the coming months as temperatures (hopefully!) rise. Aside from being surrounded by the spectacular natural scenery, one of the highlights of enjoying the outdoors in Kananaskis Country is the variety of wildlife that can be spotted by the deft eye. Keep an eye out for these local animals:

Grizzly Bear

Perhaps the most iconic member of the Rockies’ animal family, the Grizzly Bear earned its name not from its unruly coat but from its usually less-than-pleasant demeanor.

These incredible antlered animals are the Canadian Rockies’ most regularly sighted large mammal. Weighing up to 1000 lbs., they are one of North America’s largest land animals.

The largest mammal of the deer family and one of Canada’s iconic animals, the moose can weigh up to 1500 pounds and can stand up to 8 feet tall. Your best chance to see one is on the edge of marshes and lakes around the Rockies.

These majestic canines were re-introduced to the area around Banff and Canmore in 1982 after having been extirpated for 50 years. Watch for them if you happen to be driving along the Bow Valley Parkway.
Bighorn Sheep

One can often spot Bighorn Sheep along highways throughout the Banff/Jasper corridor. Another popular spot is at the top of Banff Gondola on Sulphur Mountain. Don’t be surprised to climbing some seemingly impossible terrain!

If you’re lucky enough to spot some of these incredible creatures, remember that they are indeed wild animals. As such, keep your distance and do not approach or feed them. Keep tabs on all garbage that you’ve created (including food waste such as apple cores) and make sure it is disposed of correctly!
Canmore Mountain Lodge provides an authentic Canadian Rockies experience with the all the comforts of a high-quality resort.  Complimentary breakfast and a beautiful in-house dining lounge, a fitness centre and a host of business amenities (including wireless internet and free photocopying/fax service) are just some of the perks that you’ll enjoy when you stay with us.
